Urban Biofuels: Turning Recycled Wood into Renewable Energy
At Urban Biofuels, a division of Canada Fibers Ltd., innovation meets sustainability through the transformation of clean recycled wood into high-efficiency fuel pellets. This initiative supports Canada’s transition to greener energy systems while giving post-consumer wood waste a productive second life.
By integrating biofuel production into our larger resource recovery ecosystem, we’re reducing landfill dependency, lowering carbon emissions, and helping municipalities and businesses meet their environmental goals.
What Are Biofuel Pellets?

Biofuel pellets are compacted, high-density cylinders made from processed organic material—primarily clean wood fiber. These pellets are used as fuel in residential pellet stoves and commercial biomass boilers, offering a low-emission alternative to fossil fuels like coal or oil.
Unlike many traditional wood pellets, our biofuels are made from 100% recycled sources—primarily post-consumer wood products recovered through Urban Mining and processed at our MRF Complex.
This helps keep valuable material in the circular economy while contributing to Canada’s broader Bioenergy Strategy.
The Urban Biofuels Process
- Clean Recovery
Wood waste is recovered from mixed recycling streams, construction material, and municipal solid waste collections. - Precision Sorting & Shredding
Recovered wood is sorted to eliminate treated, painted, or contaminated material, then shredded into consistent fiber. - Pelletization
The shredded material is compressed under heat to form high-density pellets, ready for use in approved biomass heating systems.
Why Urban Biofuels Matters

- ✅ Zero virgin wood required
- ✅ Diverts wood waste from landfills
- ✅ Supports low-carbon heating solutions
- ✅ Fully traceable supply chain
This model aligns with Canada Fibers’ closed-loop vision, where divisions like Urban Garden Products and Urban Polymers process other organic and plastic materials into new, usable commodities.
Use Cases for Municipalities & Businesses
Urban Biofuels provides solutions for:
- Public buildings using biomass heating
- Green-certified developments
- Manufacturers with off-grid or hybrid energy systems
- Eco-conscious retailers supporting sustainable product sourcing
Our Business Services team works with clients to evaluate biofuel opportunities based on site specs, volume needs, and environmental targets.
